Twenty Two Years Ago today the most wonderful little baby boy was born. Our son came into this world bright an early!! He arrived shortly before 6:00am and he has always been an early bird!! The last Twenty Two years we have watched our infant grow!
First,he was quite the little toddler. He caught a toaster oven on fire within minutes. He literally dragged a chair to the counter, put a towel in the toaster oven and started cooking the towel! In a panic I threw the toaster oven outside in the snow. We had that toaster oven until about 4 years ago. He caught a donut ring on fire. He was ‘decorating’ in the living room. He was such a little inventive toddler that we at one point had no lamps, no pictures on the wall, and no coffee table. Basically, we had nothing in which he could hurt himself or catch anything on fire! When I finally thought I had everything safe, what did he do? He locks me out of the bathroom with the tub of water running. Ohmygod, did I panic. Obviously, it all ended well, he is TWENTYTWO today but we do wonder because that was just the toddler years!
Our little guy then entered his grade school years. Unfortunately he was bullied. I am not talking about boys will be boys, which is what we thought at first, no he was bullied so bad for five long years that by the end of it he was paying kids with his birthday money to not pick on him. But, he never missed a day of school. He still tried out for all the sports. He still did the talent show and played the piano and sang beautifully in front of all those mean little kids and their parents. My son did not let them beat him down.
Onto his middle school years. Oh, those were somewhat better. He switched schools part way through, he met some good friends and he was up and running. He was into diving at the swim club and we enjoyed his swim meets. Our son was always active and social even though he was bullied. He worked through it and did not let them defeat him!
High School is when he took off!! He got involved in activities. He ran cross country. He was in choir and drama club, not to mention some other social clubs. Our son also worked! Of course, High School meant driving. He really had trouble with driving. Poor guy didn’t pass the test the first time around. That should have been a clue that trouble was ahead of us. He then had a few mishaps. Oh and you will love this, three mishaps were in our DRIVEWAY. Two out of three happened at the same time. See,The genius that he is when he hit the basketball pole the first time, well he wasn’t sure he hit the pole so he kept going and hit it again and harder. Most people get out of the car and check when they think they hit something, right? Another accident was when he unfortunately did hit someone downtown. Now of course we had to hear how it was DOWNTOWN’S fault and all their ONE WAY streets and then he got a speeding ticket, so there went his license, oh, man that was not fun.
Our son has been the joy of our life but he is your typical kid and as much as we would not trade him for the world he was still a normal kid. He had horrible temper tantrums leaving the park. We never understood why? I mean he knew we had to leave eventually, right? But for some reason those were his worst temper tantrums. He loved to get out of his bed, take off his clothes and sleep naked under his bed??? What was that all about?? We never understood that habit. He has quite the mouth and he will argue with you until you just want to SHOOT HIS ASS. Guess that is why he is off to law school, don’t all lawyers think they know it all?? He loves his sister dearly but loves to inform US that WE SPOIL her rotten. Like he has led this horrible, rough life?
So, Twenty Two years ago one of the two best presents were given to us and the joy so outweighs the struggles at least in our case, we are blessed with a wonderful young man! I would do it all over again in a second.
I don’t get to see my wonderful boy today but he has been on my mind and in my heart all day!!
I hope my baby boy is having a wonderful birthday!!!
