June Cleaver,Gloria Steinmen, Hear Me Roar mean anything?

by lucy on February 7, 2012

At times I am a little embarrassed to admit it but I am more like June Cleaver (for those of you saying, June Cleaver? Who in the world is June Cleaver? Well, she was a 1950′s Housewife Character from a television show,Leave it to Beaver, and overtime if they wanted to compare  a woman to 1950′s housewife, one would say, she’s a  ‘June Cleaver’).  Now, that they young ones are up to speed.  Well, one might say I am a ‘June Cleaver’ rather than, the ‘Gloria Steinem woman’ I grew up believing I would be and TAUGHT I should be.  You know, “I am WOMAN hear me ROAR” (Helen Reddy song and no I am not explaining lol Just listen!!)  type of lady!!

Although, my husband would gladly tell you he hears me ROAR plenty.  Oh gosh, I just realized many of you are probably saying, who is Gloria Steinem?  Oh my (heavy sigh)  I feel so old writing this post.  MS. Steinem and trust me she made a big deal between MISS, MS. and MRS. back in the day, was the FEMINIST of my time, along with Jane Fonda (a well known actress).  These women insisted that WOMEN Could and SHOULD have it all.  AND PLEASE  know, they did a lot for women and I respect them  But, like any activist it got to the point where they made you feel if you wanted to be at home with your family, well, that was WRONG and you were hurting ALL WOMEN if you made that choice.  Personally, I feel it took MY GENERATION to balance it out.  We began to respect the WOMAN’S choice a little better but make no mistake the age old fight still continues to this day. It seems women feel they constantly need to defend their choice!

Anyway, I thought I was going to be the woman that had it all.  SUPERWOMAN.  A FAMILY AND CAREER.  I do have it all but just not the way I planned.  I earned my degrees but it turned out I chose to stay home with my family.  I would never have expected to be more like June Cleaver than like Jane Fonda LOL.  You just never know.  But, I would like to say that I had my own version of June Cleaver.  You know, I cooked dinner when it fit my schedule, not my husband’s.  Matter of fact, I use to joke that I was the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of the house.  It was a joke.  I saw my husband as my partner but the point was my husband didn’t run the house and since I was home I created the schedule!! In other words, I wasn’t bringing my husband, his newspaper, robe, slippers and pipe at night! (Once again, for you young ones, this was often how the 1950′s housewife was viewed or portrayed).

Oh, and how I hated to cook!!!  BUT, I did manage to get a home cooked meal on the table five nights out of the week then typically we had pizza one night and we would go out to dinner another night, nothing fancy but we went OUT!  AND, my husband often helped me in the kitchen.  When he came home from work he would pitch in.  I was not JUNE CLEAVER and we were a team.  He respected my long day at home and offered assistance when he hit the door because he knew my day was far from over!

Anyway,It is funny now that my two children are on their own how much they miss some of my simple meals, not all of them but some.  I just wasn’t the world’s best cook LOL.  My husband was in Sedona for the weekend and he said that he has been cooking during the week.  He doesn’t want to eat out all the time.  I was impressed.  In addition, he said, “I am trying to add chicken and fish to the menu.  You said I was eating too much red meat but when I cooked ‘your’ fish it just didn’t taste like you make it.”  I said, “I wonder why?  You called me and I gave you the recipe.”  Now, the Fish recipe is an old one.  I got it from my mother and it is an old Weight Watcher recipe.  I don’t use it to lose weight, we just always liked it even My kids !   I don’t know the name of the recipe because I grew up with it and now my children have, it is really old.

Weight Watcher Baked Cod/Tilapia Recipe

I buy the fish fresh and I get a filet for each of us.

  • 4 Filets
  • 8 Tsp. of Butter or Margarine
  • Mayonnaise
  • Salt
  • Paprika
  • Lemon Juice

  1. Preheat oven to 425
  2. Cover a Cookie Baking Sheet Pan with foil
  3. Place Filets on Pan
  4. Lightly brush filets with Mayonnaise
  5. Sprinkle each filet lightly with salt (to taste)
  6. Place 2 tsp. of butter or margarine on each filet
  7. Sprinkle lightly each filet with Paprika (just to brown the filet a little)
  8. Lastly sprinkle lightly each filet with Lemon juice
  9. Bake in oven for 20 to 25 minutes depending on how thick the Filets are!

We usually eat them over No Yolk Extra Broad Noodles (I butter the noodles and add a little salt, garlic salt and parsley).  Some people like the fish over rice.  We have a salad and strawberries too!

Anyway, I went over the recipe with him and I said, “How could you mess that up? Did you over cook the fish?”  He said, “No, I don’t think so,  it just didn’t have the same flavor.  We didn’t have Lemon juice, so I used limoncello. I figured that was close?”  I just busted out laughing.  Now that is SOME substitution.  I told him next time to go without and I just kept laughing. Only my husband would grab alcohol for his substitution. He said he figured it had Lemon in it since it was limoncello and it would do the trick.  Oh, my gosh!

Have any great fish recipes? Got any great substitutions!!

Oh, and did you know what I meant by June Cleaver?  Did you know who Gloria Steinem was and did you know Jane Fonda, the activist, in other words, were we speaking close to the same language LOL?

Does this mean I am old. I knew all about everyone you were talking about. I even saw Helen Reddy in concert.

This resonates with me because I have felt apologetic often for being more like June Cleaver than Gloria Steinem. I am home with the kids. I do all the cooking and cleaning. I take care of school matters and doctor appointments, etc. For all outward appearances, I feel we look very 1950′s. However, I know, and I explain this to my children, that we are partners. My husband bears the entire burden of bringing home the bacon so to speak. He works long hours and makes personal sacrifices so that I can stay home with the kids. So I talk to the kids about the division of labor, the joint decision making, and most importantly, the respect we have for each other. I couldn’t do what I do without him but he couldn’t do what he does without me either. I think the choice makes all the distinction in the world. Thanks to Gloria, it’s a choice I can freely make.

Gloria Steinem 101, for those who don’t know: she’s a highly influential figure in the women’s movement of the ’60s and ’70s. She helped found Ms. Magazine. Her background is in journalism, and she one went undercover as a Playboy bunny in a bunny club for a story.

Although Steinem was famously a critic of traditional marriage, she surprised her followers by marrying for the first time in her ’60s. She married Christian Bale’s father, David. A few years later, David passed away after a short illness, but technically, Steinem is the Batman actor’s stepmother.

According to conspiracy theorists, Steinem is not actually a feminist, but a CIA agent who infiltrated the feminist movement in order to bring it down from the inside.
