Double Decker Lady

by lucy on July 13, 2012

I love the Double Decker Bus!  Yeah, I am that kind of person.  I see you rolling your eyes at me!  I know, not the cool thing to do!! But,  I am the tourist that does all the touristy things.  Yes, I know, the cool people don’t.  Call me NOT COOL!! Oh, and my poor children.  They have suffered their entire lives doing all the touristy stuff.  Boat shows!  Museum guides!  Ranger guides!! TOURS AND GUIDES!!!  I know, the COOL people,They like to find the local stuff and be more like the  locals when visiting.  Nope, I am the TOURIST GEEK!!!  What can I say? I love the Tourist stuff.  Every.little.thing. My favorite, The Double Decker Bus!! And,yep, I am the lady with the camera hanging around the neck and  The pamphlets in hand looking at everything and snapping shots of all the sights!  ALL THE SIGHTS!  In the end, I can’t remember half the shit and thank goodness for DELETE!!   Oh, and make no mistake I love listening to the the tour guides.  One warning about hanging only with the locals!  Many locals buy into urban legends and spread the fun legends as fact.  Tour guides are historians or at least  they research and give facts.  They typically set the record straight.

Our Chicago Double Decker guide was fun.  A graduate from the Columbia Film school!  He has worked on many films shot in the City of Chicago.  We all know I am a film buff.  You didn’t know this?  Well,  I am!!  So, This Double Decker Bus rider was in hog heaven!!

I got a Ton of photos (I am going to try to to remember to label them when I get home)

Here is a Friday Tidbit for you!!

Kate Winslet filmed her sick scenes for the film Contagion in The Palmer House.  Our tour guide loved Kate Winslet, he went on and on about her saying how sweet and lovely she was. Claiming she was a delightful person.  He said, “She remembered everyone’s name, even mine and on the last day she treated us and hugged us, just so sweet.”

I love those little pieces of first hand personal tidbits.

I am such the tourist!

So, what is your favorite touristy thing to do?

P.S. I do love to get restaurant information from the locals, now that is the best, from people that live there everyday, you trust them for food, oh and the best route, the locals always know the shortcut!

Oooh one day , I really can’t wait, I’d LOVE to ride on a double decker bus and I want to be on top!!! And I’ll be you with the camera taking pictures of everything.

I love learning that an actor or actress is a normal, cool person who treats people with respect.

I love learning about touristy stuff and for me, I prefer to walk around a bit if I can and see things and talk to people that you wouldn’t normally get to do while driving around.

I am not a history geek (probably payback to my mom, who was a history teacher for years!), so I often get bored or stop listening to tour guides. That’s why I like to explore the city streets on my own to get a feel for the city, it’s people, architecture, food, etc. But, even though you likely won’t find me on a double decker bus, I will say they sure do make coming to a new city convenient: “here, let us show you everything there is to know about the important stuff our city has to offer!”
