Logical versus Wonder? Can we have both?

YouTube Preview Image

In the United States many are getting ready to send their children back to school!! As a former teacher you would think I would be all for schooling? Well, make no mistake I believe in learning and education!!! BUT, like everything else I feel it is important to be watchful of how that learning and education is handled!

I love “The Logical Song” by Supertramp, off their album entitled “Breakfast in America”,the song is written by Roger Hodgson, co-founder of the band.  It makes you think! And wish we succeeded at keeping things in perspective!!

Take a  closer look at the Lyrics:

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they’d be singing so happily,
joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the world’s asleep,
the questions run too deep
for such a simple man.
Won’t you please, please tell me what we’ve learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.

Now watch what you say or they’ll be calling you a radical,
liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won’t you sign up your name, we’d like to feel you’re
acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!

At night, when all the world’s asleep,
the questions run so deep
for such a simple man.
Won’t you please, please tell me what we’ve learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.

This post is inspired by Monday’s Music Moves Me!

These bloggers host this fun Musical hop: Marie from Xmas Dolly is head conductor! To make sure things run smoothly, she has enlisted a few co-conductors: Lorie of The Shewbridges of Central Florida,  Callie of JAmericanSpice,  Stacy of Stacy Uncorked , and Cathy of  Cathy Kennedy’s Blog! This month’s honorary co-conductor is: Danielle from Royal Legacy!

Do you have a song that helps keep you grounded at times? Have you ever heard “The Logical Song?”  Did you ever notice the Lyrics? Did they stir anything in you? Or just another old weird song?

Ahhhhhhh yes, keeping things in perspective. Now that’s a very difficult task these days. Great choice my friend. Thanks for playing along with us and sharing such a mind inspiring song.

I never listened closely to the words, but you’re right about the whole learning thing. Schools have gotten political and our kids, the young & impressionable, are the ones who are risk with radical, liberal teachings. Interesting pick for freebie week, but from a musical stand point – this song really gets you moving! Keep the music alive and have musical week, my friend!

As always you have the coolest perspectives.

This was a favorite song of mine. I have always liked Supertramp. It was one of the only albums that my sister had that I could listen to in the morning.

I LOVE this music video-Whoever put it together portrays the song perfectly! :) I’ve heard of this song, but never knew who it was from.

I really like it! I love your freebie theme this week, too.

Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a musical week ^.^

And there you have the very reason I was so involved in the lovelies’ education and why we made every effort to keep as much laughter as we could in our every day lives and also why we tried to keep it simple as often as possible. I also made it my goal to enable the girls to find their own way. I felt that if they followed just because it was my way or their dad’s way or their teachers’ ways, etc. that they couldn’t own their opinions, etc. It has to be theirs, not ours. I love this post! And that song!

Great, great song and so glad you posted the lyrics. I’ve often wondered how many people you hear singing along with this song, are actually hearing the words they are singing.

That’s funny because I grew up with that song too and sang the lyrics all the time but never really paid attention to them until right now!

What a song! As a teacher it appeals to me a great deal too. I believe in logic and all that but it’s the magic that puts more meaning to things.

The Logical Song holds so much deep meaning to me. Roger Hodgson, the co-founder of Supertramp & the creative genius behind the song won the Ivor Novello songwriting award in 1980, and for perfect reason. His songs have educated many on the true meaning & purpose of life…it’s a lot of fun to sing along with others to his songs live in concert. Some of my other favorites are Give a Little Bit, Dreamer & Take the Long Way Home. :)

I never listened to the song before but great lyrics!
I’m not sure I have a specific song that keeps me grounded, but there are certain songs out there that link me to particular feelings or moments.
